Comfy Dog Bed for Christmas

Cochise, on the new dog bed
Cochise tells the tale

HairyFace’s sister sent our family a Christmas card that included a Petco gift card and instruction to get us doggies something nice for Christmas.  Hairy went shopping.  He found himself looking at snuggle beds and decided to use the funds to get me a really nice orthopedic dog bed (figuring that, like each dog bed in this place, it would get shared and used by all four house dogs).  He explained to NiceLady that he chose that one because I am 8 years old and my joints are getting cranky, especially in this cold, damp weather.   A feeling he understands all too well!  This bed is built to relieve stress on my joints.

dog bedThe new dog bed arrived in a box SO big there was no reasonable way to set it aside for Christmas morning, so he unpacked it and set it out in my place in the sleeping room.  He then moved my old bed to Josephine’s spot as an upgrade for her – which she appreciates – and moved her old dog bed out to the picture-box watching room for sun snoozing, which all of us appreciate. Cochise Goes to the Vet

Cochise, on bacon
Cochise tells the tale

After NiceLady left us to go off on her daily all-day-long-car-ride, HairyFace put my harness on me.

Blondie Bear and I got excited because that means we’re going off-property.  I don’t need to wear the harness when I’m in my yard, just to go out on a leash.  My muscular neck is bigger around than my head, so no collar will keep me securely on a leash if I want to get off.  The harness does.  Looks cool too: like a biker-dog.

Blondie Bear got upset when Hairy told her she needed to stay home.  She huffed and harrfed at us while Hairy and I went out and loaded into the truck.

When we got to the end of our driveway, we turned right, not left: we were not going to the trash place … where were we going?  The drive-through cookie store?

Blondie Joins the Fun

Cochise tells the tale

Blondie Bear has been feeling poorly for the past few months: she has the itchies real bad.  She’s gone to see Dr. Sandra a couple of times.  Dr. Sandra gave HairyFace some medicine for Blondie: that helped the itchies but made her sleepy.  Now that the problem is clearing up and Blondie isn’t spending all her time either scratching or sleeping, she is getting to be her spunky self again.  And that means she can be trouble for me sometimes. Invasion Force

On Sunday I noticed Cochise shaking his head and scratching at his ears. I checked him out and found some gunk inside, which I removed with Q-tips. I made a note to stop into Tractor Supply and get some ear mite medication, just in case.

“My ears hurt!”

This morning I checked him again and found both ears swollen and hot. I decided to put a call in to Doctor Sandra and make an appointment: I assumed he’d scratched at his ears enough to cause an infection.

Before I could do that, during the morning poop patrol, I found what I believe to be the true source of his discomfort: a yellow jacket nest in the play yard. Continue reading Invasion Force

Cochise’s Bedtime Dilemma

Last night Cochise had a bedtime dilemma.

Cochise and Blondie Bear are permanent residents.  Tinker, Jasmine and Gator are foster dogs.  We offer multiple dog beds but who sleeps on what can be kind of fluid during the day and evening.  Everyone is okay with that.

At bedtime, however, each dog has a definite preference. Continue reading Cochise’s Bedtime Dilemma

Cochise’s Terrible, Horrible, No-good, Rotten Day

Blondie strolled in and looked over my shoulder as I pecked out the title of my story on the keyboard. “Are you sure you want to call it that?”

“Yes.”

“I mean, it wasn’t even the whole day: just a couple of hours.”

“It’s my story, and I like the title. I think it’s catchy. I think my readers will like it too. So, how about you go chew a hoofie or something.”

“Hmph!” Blondie wheeled around and sauntered out the door, headed for the picture-box watching room and the basket of toys and chewies.

Actually, she does have a point: my ordeal did not last all day, and it ended well. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Now, where to start?

It was an average Friday… Continue reading Cochise’s Terrible, Horrible, No-good, Rotten Day

Cochise’s Dudes Day Out

Cochise OWNS the sunshine
Cochise tells the Tale

On Monday morning HairyFace helped me put my harness on, and I wondered why he was doing that. We had already done the trash run a couple of days before. He snapped on a leash and walked me out to the truck. That was good news, I like truck rides!

After belting me in, he got in and started the make-it-go thing. He did not go get Blondie: Blondie’s not coming too? That usually means we’re going to the vet. Not that I mind going to my vet: she is very nice, everyone loves on me and I get lots of treats. But they also like to poke me with sharp things. I don’t care for that part.

We rolled down the driveway and turned toward town. Could be the vet, could be the cookie-window place.

There’s a place that Hairy goes sometimes to swap out pieces of paper with a lady behind a big glass window. She always sends out some dog cookies with his slips of paper. We could be going there.

When we got to the end of go-sorta-fast road he turned toward town. My vet is the other way: not going to the vet. I started licking my lips and thinking about those cookies.

But he drove right past the cookie-window place. I groused at him, “Growl-grr-ruff!”: “Where are you going, you missed it!” But he kept going and seemed to know where he wanted to go. Continue reading Cochise’s Dudes Day Out

Tinker truck ride

Triple Dog Truck’n and Saturday Chores

Cochise,
Cochise tells the tale

It’s a beautiful fall Saturday and we are all enjoying being outside in it as much as we can.

This morning HairyFace loaded the trash and recycling bins into the truck and Blondie and I got excited because we know this means TRUCK RIDE!

cochise_truck-ride-151212Hairy helped me put my harness on, walked me out and belted me into the shot-gun seat. I always get shot-gun on trash days: that’s a rule. Blondie doesn’t mind: she prefers the space behind the seats because she can move around and stick her nose out either window.

As he was walking Blondie out to the truck, Tinker was standing off to the side, looking sad.

“What’s the matter Tinker?” asked Blondie. Continue reading Triple Dog Truck’n and Saturday Chores

We’re SO Happy You’re HOME!

Cochise,
Cochise tells the tale

On most days NiceLady leaves us a little after breakfast and goes on a long car ride that lasts the whole day … until just before dinner time. We miss her terribly while she’s out having fun.

HairyFace stays with us to keep us company and open the door for us when we need to go in and out. And to give us lunch cookies. And to scratch us and pet us when we need it. He does some other strange things during the day, but mostly he’s here for us to look after him and keep him safe while he does those little trifles for us.

On Sundays they BOTH leave us at home by ourselves and that’s really awful. But that’s not all day, just long enough to get a good nap in.

When NiceLady has been gone all day we get excited about her coming home.

Sometimes it takes her a while to come in and we get impatient, but we’re always happy to see her.
